Lots of people hear about your business, I’m sure.

How can you nurture them from being interested in your business to making an enquiry?

Growing and using an email list can really help. Email gives you direct access to your leads anytime you want… now that’s an asset worth taking care of!

Here we look at the ways you can capture email addresses and grow your email list organically ready for you to market your prospects directly.

How to grow your email list

Growing your email list requires more than just a generic sign-up form on your website. To truly stand out and capture the attention of your target audience, you need to get creative. So let’s explore some innovative and unconventional strategies on how to grow your email list and supercharge your marketing efforts.

1. Give content away for free

This is my absolute favourite and I highly recommend it.

Everybody loves a chance to win free stuff! But a potential lead’s contact information is important, so they’ll only give it away for something they believe will add value to their life.

Vouchers or freebies are costly, eroding your margins. Rather than invest in physical freebies, invest in creating something that you can keep giving away time and time again…. namely, lead magnets.

Here are some creative ideas for your lead magnets.

  • Ebooks
  • Guides
  • Templates
  • Checklists
  • Taster courses (e.g. pre-recorded video courses that can be accessed via a secret link)
  • Webinars. Require attendees to register for the event using their email address.
  • Infographics
  • Reports
  • Whitepapers
  • Content upgrades. A content upgrade is bonus content that provides additional value to the main piece of content and is gated behind an email sign-up form. For example, a bonus chapter to an ebook.

The key is to offer something highly relevant, valuable, and irresistible to your target audience.

2. Make it easy to sign up

Make it easy for people to subscribe to your email list by using clear calls-to-action (CTAs) across your website, blog, and other digital touchpoints. “Sign up” is a very clear call to action. As a user, I understand that if I add my email address and click “sign up” then I’ll be signed up!

You’d be surprised how many people get this wrong, though!

3. Leverage social media

When it comes to how to grow your email marketing list, make sure to harness the power of social media to grow your email list by strategically leveraging platforms like Facebook, Instagram, The artist formerly known as Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Create compelling posts, stories, or ads that direct users to a landing page where they can sign up for your email list.

4. Collaborate with other brands

Teaming up with complementary brands can help you expand your reach and grow your email list exponentially.

Identify brands that share your target audience but are not direct competitors, and explore partnership opportunities such as:

  • co-hosted events, such as webinars
  • joint content giveaways
  • guest blogging exchanges.

By leveraging each other’s networks, you can reach new audiences and attract qualified leads to your email list.

5. Nurture their interest with valuable content

Didn’t we do this one already? Yes, but remember…content is king and you can’t forget about your existing subscribers and give everything away to the newbies!

Provide your subscribers with valuable and relevant content that educates, entertains, or solves their problems.

Whether it’s blog posts, how-to guides, industry insights, case studies, or exclusive offers, focus on delivering content that adds value to their lives and keeps them engaged with your brand.

Be consistent with your content delivery schedule to maintain top-of-mind awareness and build trust over time. Give them something they won’t get anywhere else to reward them for staying with you. This keep warm process is so important when the call to action comes along later.

6. Use automation

Utilise email automation tools to streamline your email marketing efforts and deliver timely, targeted messages to your subscribers at every stage of the customer journey. Here’s a few ideas for you to try:

  • Set up automated welcome emails,
  • Use nurture sequences (e.g. a short sequence of 4 or 5 emails that follow on from their initial entry point. If your lead submitted their email address by downloading a lead magnet, then maybe try a sequence of emails that act as a follow-up to whatever topic that lead magnet was covering.)
  • Re-engagement campaigns (e.g. send a promotion to those who haven’t opened an email or clicked through yet)
  • Monthly useful content campaigns (schedule them in advance to save yourself time).

7. Encourage feedback

Lastly, regularly solicit feedback from your subscribers through surveys, polls, or feedback forms to understand their preferences, needs, and pain points better. Actively listen to their feedback and use it to improve your products, services, and email campaigns. By demonstrating that you value their input and are committed to addressing their concerns, you can build trust and loyalty with your audience.

Why not just buy email addresses?

There is no doubt that there are very reasonable reasons why you might want to shortcut all this hard work and just buy email addresses from a data broker. After all, time is precious, and creating relevant content is hard work.

Sometimes buying data is appropriate. But sometimes it can be a waste of money. Even if you are careful in selecting which type of data you want (e.g. you filter your request according to industry for example), you might end up wasting money.

Yes, if you throw enough mud at a wall, some of it will stick, but because these users have NEVER heard of you before, they are not warm leads and the road to conversion will be longer.

From my own experience, I never open emails from organisations that I’ve never interacted with before. For me, it’s a big turn-off.

I am not saying that buying data is NEVER appropriate. But, be careful that this isn’t your go-to tactic. At least give them something of value from the get-go so that you can cultivate a relationship with them.

Make yourself valuable

If you remember nothing else, then remember this… unless your content is interesting, relevant and valuable to your target audience, you will find it very difficult to grow your email list organically. Invest in creating high-quality lead magnets and email campaigns that excite and nurture your prospects. By investing in content, you’re demonstrating that you’re invested in your prospects, and you’ll stand a greater chance of converting them.
